‘Why Are You Voting?’: Mika Brezinski, Chris Mathews Attack All Trump Voters For Backing Him After Jan 6
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews and MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski expressed frustration on Friday over voters still supporting former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Vice President Kamala Harris accused Trump of “gaslighting” when he described the riot as a “day of love” during a Univision town hall Wednesday with Latino voters. Matthews and Brzezinski, on “Morning Joe,” suggested no American should cast a ballot for Trump due to his alleged role in the riot and his subsequent rhetoric.

“I don’t understand people voting for Trump in the light of January 6th. I do not understand letting him laugh at our democracy and then try to bring it down … If you don’t think elections matter, if you don’t think democracy matters, why are you voting? What’s your vote all about? Why are you voting personally? Why does this matter to you to vote? It is the American system,” Matthews yelled. “It is our system. Stop laughing about it. Stop the Comedy Central nonsense about it. Stop yucking about it. It’s not funny.”
Harris sent a pre-recorded video instead of attending the Al Smith charity dinner on Thursday, where Trump delivered nearly 30 minutes of live remarks, including many jokes, in person.
“Those people that went in there that killed those cops, I was one of those cops. I worked a couple of feet from the lobby door, the Speaker’s lobby. They tried to break their way in there. They were trying to destroy democracy. What’s to be forgotten about this? Don’t forget it,” he added. “Remember it. This is a big day in American history, the attack on our democracy. And if your vote matters to you, it should matter to everybody. It’s a terrible story.”
No officers died on Jan. 6, but Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died the following day after engaging rioters who entered the building. The chief medical examiner of Washington, D.C., found that he suffered two strokes and passed away from natural causes.
However, four Capitol Police officers committed suicide after the riots.
Brzezinski expressed total agreement with Matthews.
“I agree with your intensity at this time. This is not a time for jokes, and this is not a time to dance around topics, because this is coming at all of us, Republicans too,” she said. “Your freedoms are at risk too. Don’t know what you’re doing supporting this man right now with what he has said. But there are efforts to sidestep, dance around things that he’s saying that are clear fascism.”
A September New York Times/Siena College poll found Trump and Harris tied at 47% among voters in Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina, on whom they trust to handle democracy. The NYT described the finding from its own poll as “striking,” given Trump’s past impeachment for what they described as “his role” in the riot at the Capitol.
