Vance Sees Uptick, Thune Largely Unknown Among Voters

A few politicians saw some bounces in their favorability ratings this month.

• Vice President JD Vance is viewed favorably by 47% of voters.
  • This is up 7 points from April and nearing the 50% high in December.
  • Still, 49% view Vance unfavorably.
  • Eighty-two percent (82%) of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Vance compared to just 16% of Democrats.
• Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is viewed favorably by 34%.
  • This is up 6 points from April and nearing the 38% high in May 2025.
  • Conversely, 37% view Johnson unfavorably.
  • A solid majority (57%) of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Johnson, but only 14% of Democrats have the same view.
• Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, has a favorable review of 30%.
  • This is up 4 points from April.
  • Still, 38% view Johnson unfavorably, also up 4 points from April.
  • Perhaps because Jeffries is the minority leader, his favorability numbers steadily rose from a low of 21% 2 years ago.
  • Over the past year or so, his favorability ratings have gone up and down, beginning with 32% in January 2025 and a high of 36% last July.
  • One third (32%) of voters have never heard of Jeffries or don’t know enough to have an opinion.
• Many voters (48%) still have not heard of (or do not know enough about) Senate Majority Leader John Thune to have an opinion.
  • He is viewed favorably by just 17%, and unfavorably by 35%.
  • Thune has a low favorability rating among both Republicans (25%) and Democrats (12%).
• Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been in office since 1999 and is relatively well known.
  • He is viewed favorably by 30%, a 3-point increase from April.
  • Schumer is viewed unfavorably by 52%, up 5 points from March.
  • Even among Democrats, Schumer has low ratings, with 42% Favorable and 37% Unfavorable.
