Those Who Make The Most Say They Pay Too Much In Taxes
The more people earn, the more they believe they pay too much in taxes.
Voters who earn more than $150,000 a year lead the way, with 49% believing they pay more than their fair share of taxes. Of those who earn less than $35,000 a year, just 19% believe they pay more than their fair share.
There is also an educational divide. Most voters (53%) with postgraduate degrees believe they pay more than their fair share in taxes. Those without a postgraduate degree are more likely to think they pay an appropriate amount; of this group, 53% think they pay their fair share. The postgraduate distinction is so consistent across issues that NNS considers it one of the three primary characteristics of the Elite 1%.
Forty-two percent (42%) of those with bachelors degrees think they pay more than their fair share in taxes, while just 28% of those without college degrees think they pay more than their fair share.
