Majority Continues To Say Secure Border Before Reforming Immigration

• A majority of Americans (56%) continue to say that there is no point in reforming our immigration system unless the border is secure.
  • That number has stayed relatively stable since June of 2025, though it is down from 66% in January of that year.
  • Meanwhile, 35% disagree and say securing the border is not necessary before reform.
  • Three quarters (74%) of Republicans say it is necessary to secure the border first, while Democrats are more divided: 43% say securing the border is necessary before reform, but 47% disagree.
• Two thirds (67%) of voters say the government is serious about trying to secure the border.
  • Under President Biden, just 25% felt the government was seriously trying to secure the border.
• As a result of the changing views of the administration, 53% say the border is at least Somewhat Secure, while 39% disagree.
  • These numbers include 15% of voters who say the border is Very Secure and 9% who claim it is Not At All Secure.
  • Republicans say the border is secure by a 56% to 36% margin.
  • Democrats agree by a lesser margin of 51% to 37%.
• In all talks about immigration, it is important to remember that 64% of voters say legal is good and illegal is bad.
  • Another 20% say legal and illegal immigration are good for the United States, while just 11%say legal immigration and illegal immigration are bad.

This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, February 18-19, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
