‘Criminals Run Free’: Elon Musk Slams Gavin Newsom, Calls Him ‘The Joker’ As Crime Continues During His Term
Billionaire Elon Musk called out Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday, telling Daily Caller News Foundation co-founder Tucker Carlson that he believes his leadership has contributed to the state’s downfall.
Musk has repeatedly criticized the state’s leadership since the COVID-19 lockdowns, even joining the California exodus by announcing his residency move in December 2020. Musk explained on “The Tucker Carlson Show” that he has been urging people to “reverse course” on the state’s current agenda, noting that Proposition 36, an initiative to toughen penalties for certain drug and theft crimes, is gaining traction.
“Well, actually, I think I’ve been able to persuade people that, yeah, we really, we need to reverse course here. I think I’ve actually been able to persuade a number of people. I think there actually is now a ballot, a California ballot initiative, to re-criminalize theft,” Musk said.
“So, and then, amazingly, Gavin Newsom came out against that proposition. Yeah, no, honestly, he’s the goddamn Joker. Gavin Newsom is like from the Batman, Dark Knight. The Joker is in charge of Gotham. You remember when he took over New York basically? The criminals run free and the citizens are arrested, that’s how — that’s California.,” Musk added. “But, I mean, at least there’s a ballot initiative, which I think will probably pass to say, ‘No, actually it is a crime to steal things.’”
Carlson then asked the billionaire about his beliefs regarding Newsom’s motives to “favor” crime and oppose Proposition 36, stating that Newsom appears as a “perfectly nice guy.” (RELATED: California National Guard Seizes Millions Of Dollars Worth Of Fentanyl In Single Month)
“Well, his stated reason was that it would disproportionately affect people of color,” Musk said.

Musk stated that Newsom’s intentions are “essentially saying black people and Hispanics are criminals,” to which Carlson agreed, adding that it “gives rise to racism.” Carlson then questioned who Musk believes is behind Newsom’s motives to “favor” crime, leading Musk to identify a “Soros boogeyman.” This prompted Carlson to ask how real Musk thinks the influence of left-wing billionaire George Soros is.
“It’s real. I don’t think one can ascribe everything to Soros. George himself is, I mean, he’s senile at this point, he’s not compos mentis. So his son, Alex, is in charge. But there is this whole system that Soros built over many decades, and so it’s I guess Soros and like minded people whatever. They believe in open borders, they believe we shouldn’t prosecute crime. This is insane,” Musk said.
“Those seem like expressions of hatred toward the United States. If I was pushing out on a country, I would only do that if I hated the country and wanted to destroy it,” Carlson added.
During the state’s prolonged COVID-19 lockdowns, Musk’s company, Tesla, filed a lawsuit in May 2020 against Alameda County for shutting down its Fremont manufacturing plant due to COVID-19 restrictions. Although the lawsuit was withdrawn shortly after, Musk pushed to defy county ordinances and keep the Fremont site open, stating that if anyone should be arrested, it should be him.
In addition to his departure from the state, Musk announced in July the official exit of his SpaceX headquarters from the state after Newsom approved a new law allowing schools to withhold notifications from parents about their child’s sexuality or gender identity.
During an interview with prominent Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson on July 22, Musk discussed the state’s push to divide parents against children in schools, sharing his personal experience with his son, who came out as transgender, and noting how he felt “tricked” into allowing his son to take puberty blockers.
