Democratic strategist James Carville griped Friday that the Democratic Party is continuously reported in a “negative light” as he clashed with CNN’s host Jake Tapper over Vice President Kamala Harris’ polls in a key swing state.
Polls between Harris and former President Donald Trump have tightened in key swing states, with Michigan becoming a concern for Democrats. While on “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” Carville called out Tapper and CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten, who had previously warned about Harris trailing in Michigan polls.
“If I listen to you and Harry [Enten], I think she ought to quit, okay? I’ve just never seen anything like the piling on of like well — she‘s behind in union households, in Dearborn she’s behind. She‘s behind here, there, she‘s behind everywhere. I‘ll go ahead and make a prediction, if there’s seven swing states, the least likely outcome is they break four, three,” Carville said.
“But it‘s also, Jake, a gospel rule that every piece of information has to be interpreted in the most negative light for Democrats. But I don‘t know if she‘s behind in everything. Why is she ahead?” Carville questioned. “Maybe I‘m just too stupid and not sophisticated enough to figure this out. But I don‘t think she ought to quit. I think she ought to play through Election Day.”
Tapper jumped into state that while “no one’s suggesting that she quit,” Harris does “have challenges in Michigan.” As Carville attempted to push back, Tapper reiterated that he has heard concerns from Democrats about Michigan. “I‘m hearing from top Democrats today who say that they‘re worried about Michigan. They‘re not saying they‘re given up there, saying they got you know — ” Tapper said.
“You think Trump’s not worried about North Carolina? You think Trump‘s not worried about Wisconsin? I mean, but all I‘m saying, Jake, there is an ironclad rule that every data point has to be interpreted in the most negative light for the Democrat. I‘m just challenging that ironclad rule, that‘s all,” Carville responded.
In a recent interview with CNN’s John King, 26-year-old Arab voter, Wahbeh Nuseibeh, told the host he could not vote for Harris in “good conscience” even after voting for both former Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and President Joe Biden for president.
King additionally warned that Harris is not “doing as well as Biden did in 2020 on Election Day,” questioning how long she could “afford to trail him.” In a current RealClearPolling average, Harris is only leading Michigan by 0.7 points, as she holds 48.3% with Trump at 47.6%.
