Caddo Parish Public Schools show significant growth in LEAP scores

(The Center Square) — Caddo Parish Public Schools saw significant gains and growth in student assessment scores districtwide for math, English and science after the Louisiana Department of Education released Louisiana Educational Assessment Program score data.

Caddo Public Schools Superintendent Keith Burton spoke about the success in a recent news release.

“I want to congratulate our students, teachers, school leaders and support teams for the dedication that brought us to today’s announcement,” said Burton last week. “From expanded instructional time and research-aligned curricula to targeted coaching and individualized student supports, we have built a foundation that will carry us even further as we continue this work together.”

Students in fourth and fifth grades showed an increase in mastery and above scores in ELA, math and science. All grades fourth through eighth showed significant growth in math scores, scoring mastery and above. There was also a decrease in the number of students who scored unsatisfactory.

Burton attributes the success in math to the intentional multi-pronged strategy put in place by the district. Burton said they have doubled daily math instructional time and heavily invested in coaching and professional development for both teachers and school leaders.

A.C. Steere, Atkins, Captain Shreve, C.E. Byrd, Creswell Elementary School, Fair Park and Forest Hill were among the 24 schools in the district, with an increase in students scoring mastery and above for the 2024-2025 school year.

High school students showed growth in algebra I, geometry, English I and biology. The district has also increased access to high school courses for its middle school students.

Highlighted increases for eighth grade algebra I scores included Ridgewood from 49.6% to 84.62%, Walnut Hill from 60.4% to 88.89% and Donnie Bickham from 58.9% to 75.61%.

“While we celebrate these gains, we know we’re not where we need to be. That’s why I’m so proud of the structures we’ve put in place,” said Burton.
