Bill Maher Responds To Larry David Invoking Hitler To Mock His Dinner With Trump

HBO host Bill Maher said that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” creator Larry David’s op-ed mocking his visit with President Donald Trump by invoking Adolf Hitler was “insulting” to the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust.

David’s satirical op-ed” in The New York Times, “My Dinner With Adolf,” compared Maher’s dinner with Trump to dining with Hitler, where he envisioned a critic of Hitler having a friendly and cordial meeting with the Nazi dictator. While sitting down with Piers Morgan, Maher skewered the comparison of Trump and Hitler, and added that he has repeatedly been critical of the president.

“I must say, you know, come on man. Hitler, Nazis, nobody has been harder, or more pressing I should say, about Donald Trump than me,” Maher said. “I don’t need to be lectured on who Donald Trump is. Just the fact that I met him in person didn’t change that and the fact that I reported honestly is not a sin either. But, you know, to use the Hitler thing, first of all, I just think it’s kind of insulting to the six million dead Jews. That should kind of be in its own place in history and you know, I know some people can say ‘well we’re just comparing it in this way.’ Well, it’s an argument you kind of lost just as it started.”

“It’s just, maybe it’s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place. He is the goat of evil, and we’re just gonna have to, I think, leave it like that. Did I think that was appropriate, no,” Maher continued.

Maher joined UFC President Dana White and musician Kid Rock at the White House for dinner in late March. The comedian and political commentator said his meeting with Trump is more effective than “pretending to ignore” the Republican Party, who currently hold all of the political power in Washington, D.C.

On the April 12 edition of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Maher said that Trump is more approachable than any of the leaders of the Democrat Party, indicating that is one of the reasons the party is currently so unpopular.

Maher further told Morgan that he would talk and be friends with David again, stating that he is willing to talk to anyone who he holds disagreements with.

“I don’t want to make this constantly personal between me and Larry. We might be friends again, I don’t know. I can be. I can take a shot and I can absolutely take it when people disagree with me,” Maher said. “It’s not exactly the way I would have done it but you know, again, the irony. Let’s go back to what my original thing was. There’s got to be a better way than hurling insults and not talking to people. If I can talk to Trump, I can talk to Larry David too.”

While David did not mention Trump or Maher by name, the Times’ deputy opinion editor Patrick Healy said that he “understood [David’s] intent in writing this piece.” He wrote that David responded to Maher calling his meeting with the president “gracious and measured.”
