A Nation Divided: Voter Opinion Split on American Society

• Perceptions of American society continue to be pessimistic, as just 44% of voters say that it is generally Fair and Decent.
  • This is down 4 points earlier this month, but up 5 from January.
  • Meanwhile, 49% say American society is Unfair and Discriminatory, up 9 points from earlier this month but close to January’s and November’s ratings.
  • Republicans say our society is Fair and Decent by a 66% to 27% margin.
  • Democrats are not so optimistic: 70% say American society is Unfair and Discriminatory, and 25% say it is Fair and Decent.
• Along a similar vein, just 44% call America a land of liberty and justice for all, while 49% say it is not.
  • These numbers are close to the sentiment we saw in January and last July.
  • Again, Republicans mostly agree the country is a land of liberty and justice for all, with 69% saying that is a fair description.
  • Democrats are the mirror image, with 69% saying it is not.
• While there is still a general view that America is the land of opportunity, that number has also fallen.
  • Six in 10 voters (59%) consider America the land of opportunity, up 9 points from January and the same as last July.
  • One quarter (27%) say America is NOT the land of opportunity, down 6 points from January and the same as last July.
  • Republicans overwhelmingly believe America is the land of opportunity by a 80% to 11% margin.
  • Fewer Democrats (43%) believe that America is the land of opportunity, while 38% disagree, and 18% are Not Sure.
  • More men (70%) than women (49%) say America is still the land of opportunity.

This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, April 22-23, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
