68% Say Being a Mother Is a Woman’s Most Important Role

  • A majority (68%) of registered voters say that being a mother is the most important role a woman can play during her lifetime.
    • This is down 1 point from last May, and down 2 points from May 2024.
    • This year, 22% disagree, and 10% are not sure.
    • More Republicans (74%) than Democrats (62%) and Independents (65%) say being a mother is the most important role for women.
    • Interestingly, 84% of Black Democrats say being a woman is the most important role, and only 50% of White Democrats say the same.
    • Eight in 10 voters (80%) of voters with children at home also say the role of mother is the most important role for a woman.
  • One third (34%) say Mother’s Day is one of our nation’s most important holidays.
    • Just 11% say it is the least important.
    • Half of voters (50%) say it is somewhere in between.
  • Similar to the last several years, 66% of voters say they will be celebrating Mother’s Day this weekend.
    • One quarter (24%) will not be celebrating.
  • Among the 55% of voters who say their mother is still alive and who will be celebrating, 60% plan to visit their mother.
    • About the same number (57%) will bring their mother a gift.
    • Forty-two percent (42%) will take their mom out for a meal.
    • Three in 10 voters (29%) will send flowers to their mother.
  • The mothers of 45% of voters have passed, but they still plan to celebrate Mother’s Day.
    • Two in 5 of these voters (39%) plan to celebrate Mother’s Day by visiting with their own children.
    • One quarter (27%) will take their wife out for a meal.

This data is from a Napolitan News Service survey of 1,000 Registered Voters conducted online by Scott Rasmussen, May 4-5, 2026. RMG Research, Inc., conducted the field work for the survey. It has a margin of error of +/- 3.1.
