6 in 10 Say Trump Tariffs Push Prices Up

• Currently 41% of voters say that President Trump’s tariffs have been good for the economy, while 50% say they have been bad.
  • The only time those ratings have been lower this year is in late April, just after the tariffs were announced following Liberation Day.
  • The numbers include 15% who say tariffs have been Very Good for the economy, while 32% say they have been Very Bad.
  • Partisan politics abound, as 7 in 10 Republicans (69%) say tariffs have been good for the economy, compared to 8 in 10 Democrats (78%) who disagree.
• As is often the case, voters with a postgraduate degree have significantly different opinions than the nation at large.
  • Voters without a postgraduate degree reflect the national average: 42% say tariffs have been good for the economy, while 48% say they have been bad.
  • However, voters with a postgraduate degree are far more negative, with 63% saying they have been bad for the economy.
• Similarly, 59% of voters say tariffs have caused prices on consumer goods to go up, while just 13% disagree.
  • Another 14% claim they the tariffs have had no impact on prices.
  • This is more optimistic than in November, when 73% said tariffs caused prices to go up, and is in line with late July, when we asked voters what would happen if President Trump’s tariff plan went into effect.
  • A solid plurality (44%) of Republicans say tariffs have caused higher prices on consumer goods, along with 76% of Democrats.Postgraduate voters are again more pessimistic, with 70% saying they have caused prices to go up.
